Cranberry Township Sends Residents SurveyPosted on: 2008-02-11Cranberry Township prepares to mail opinion survey to residents
Cranberry Township is in the middle of a long-range community planning effort that uses the theme “What do we want to be when we grow up?” However, its light-hearted title actually covers a serious and complex planning effort that aims to chart a future course for the community which will ensure its sustainability through 2030.
As part of that effort, Cranberry Township is inviting a random sample of 3,000 residents to respond to an opinion survey developed by a national professional association. The results will enable Township leaders to identify issues of concern to residents, to compare resident opinions about its quality of life, its programs and its services with those of similar communities from across the nation and, through follow-up surveys in the future, to provide benchmarks against which to measure its own progress.
The survey’s results will also be compared with those of the Citizen Advisory Panel, a group of 80 local residents who are working with the Township to develop The Cranberry Plan, a comprehensive planning initiative intended to guide the community’s future through 2030. A summary of the survey findings will be presented in April to Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors and then posted on the Township website.
Dick Hadley, chairman of Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors, says the Township hopes that everyone who receives a survey will respond. “The higher our response rate, the better,” said Hadley. “We’d like to institute a regular schedule for conducting citizen surveys, as one method for keeping in touch with resident opinions and concerns, so we are anxious to see how this effort turns out.”
Cranberry leaders chose not to design the survey locally and instead, selected a modified version of a questionnaire prepared by The National Citizen Survey™ – a study sponsored by the International City/County Management Association in cooperation with National Research Center, Inc.
Background on the National Citizen Survey
The questionnaire and survey procedure are based on the organization’s experience with hundreds of local governments of all sizes. Using a standard template, many cities can be surveyed at one time, making The National Citizen Survey an effective and cost-efficient way to measure local opinion.
Cities and counties in twenty states participate in The National Citizen Survey. Among them: Scottsdale, Arizona; Denver, Colorado; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Oceanside, California; and Rockhill, South Carolina.
